    Ravensweald Familiar

    by M A Lukas

Stephen Blackwood, out of work photographer, lives in the quiet village of Ravensleigh which lies in the shadow of Ravensweald Hall where whispers of ghosts and ancient curses linger.
Stephen has led a seemingly uneventful life until his ex-partner is killed and their child is hospitalised. Desperate for work in order to care for his son, he visits the mysterious five-sided tower in the grounds of Ravensweald Hall for a photo-shoot for a new job. It is here where Stephen is flung through time to civil war England, 1644. The tower will be his exit back to his time and home, but he soon learns that he must remain in the past for a year – those are the rules.
The world he has entered is perilous and bound by old laws, witchcraft and superstition. With danger closing in and an evil adversary on his trail, Stephen uncovers secrets buried in the Hall’s shadowy past. Haunted by strange occurrences and helped by some of the enigmatic individuals he meets, Stephen must confront the dark forces at play. His loyalties are tested and he is faced with difficult, if not impossible choices.
Will he reunite with his gravely ill son? Will Hope be enough? Stephen’s survival is, by no means, a given.

“Burn them, I say. Light the pyre and see the flames cleanse the night of its evil.” The roar of the leader was met with raucous assent from the gathered crowd and echoed upward and out through the trees on Boarweg Copse.

It was no surprise that Celeste left Stephen for the style and charm of Claude Favreau. Claude had position, prospects and that grossly irritating smooth swagger. A lot of Stephen’s thoughts on Claude were darker.

“Celey? You there?” Stephen did not reach her in time. After the crash they buried Celeste. Marcus clings to a thread of life in a hospital bed. In an attempt to silence the voices, Stephen glugs booze from a mug.

The castle breathed through the hours, whispering indecipherable rhymes and chants. Noises had been heard from high in Lady Roxstanton’s tower and from below stairs in the belly of the castle.
Now, Sable, the hound watched the beamed ceiling in the great hall, tracking the path of footsteps from one end of the passageway above to the other which led towards the tower steps.

Shadows of past deeds were come to haunt him.
When he tried to escape those thoughts, the image of Francine and Stephen together ran through Oliver’s mind again, tormenting and teasing his fragile love for the Duchess. He needed to know the measure of his adversary, Blackwood; this handsome trickster who had shown his face and remained at Ravensweald with Francine.

I recommend Ravensweald Familiar most highly, particularly for readers who enjoy stories of time travel, history, mystery and a bit of romance (and who doesn’t?). This book is a tour de force and the author, M A Lukas is to be congratulated. Bring on the sequel!!!

Review for Ravensweald Familiar

Beautifully written.
Ravensweald is the kind of book that quietly wraps around you like mist and lingers long after the final page.
The characters are well-developed, each with their own complexities and motivations making their journeys all the more compelling.

Review for Ravensweald Familiar

With the likeable and somewhat colourful characters, alongside the Hall’s history and secrets, you get a real ‘picture’ and sense of being there. A well crafted piece of writing that kept me on the edge of my seat. A real joy to read and difficult to put down!! Here’s hoping there is a sequel!?

Review for Ravensweald Familiar

Two enthralling plots and time frames are skillfully interwoven, both with an array of fascinating characters and both set against the backdrop of a beautifully depicted Ravensweald Hall.
MA Lukas writes with great authority and purpose taking the reader on a
spell-binding journey, not just through time, but also of self-discovery, love
and hope.
I enjoyed the book immensely and would thoroughly recommend.
